Does Wendy Williams Lack Self Confidence on the Dance Floor

Sibling Rivalry and Self Confidence

They are people who are closest to us — our siblings. But sometimes, our relationship with them can sour because we might perceive them as being more talented than us, or better looking, or a parent’s favourite. To enjoy and make the most of this relationship, keep a few things in mind: Samir Parikh, Hindustan Times

I suffered with this my whole life. No, I didn't feel diminished by my three siblings but apparently they felt that way towards me. Being the youngest in the family I grew up adoring my brothers and sister. The fact they didn't feel the same towards me didn't deter my innate affection for them.

Decades later I was talking with my sister and told her that over the years my husband often asked me if there was sibling rivalry in my family. I'd always reply, "Noooooooooooooo-not a bit." Because I felt no sibling rivalry towards my siblings I believed they were the same way.

The "how stupid can you be" look on my sister's face when I shared this with her changed all that. She hurtfully blurted out, "You were always Dad's favorite!" My brother walked in on the conversation and piped up, "You were ALWAYS the golden girl."

"No I wasn't, no ...I wasn't," I chimed back not wanting to feel their resentment towards me. But I saw it in their faces, they believed it was true and so for them it was true. I've thought about that conversation many times since and have looked at how their lives have been negatively impacted by sibling rivalry towards me. It under minded their sense of self and self confidence making them feel hurt, angry and diminished.

Read about ten productive ways to build your self confidence if you or someone else compares you to a sibling.

Self Confidence and Self Esteem Quote

Self-esteem is reliance on one’s power to think. It cannot be replaced by one’s power to deceive. The self-confidence of a scientist and the self-confidence of a con man are not interchangeable states, and do not come from the same psychological universe. The success of a man who deals with reality augments his self-confidence. The success of a con man augments his panic.  Ayn Rand

The annual Women's World Summit (taking place this past week) celebrates the power and achievements of women around the world. Were she alive today Ayn Rand certainly would've been one of those being recognized for her writing achievements.

Ayn Rand was a woman in possession of tremendous self-esteem and self confidence. Ultimately maybe too much of both. Her writings are celebrated still today but certain of her actions in her private life left some of her devotees lives fractured.

While healthy self esteem and self confidence are the engines that drive us towards success, a certain amount of humility is always a good thing to have. It acts as a counter balance when self esteem and self confidence gets out of control.
